We have 20 tool gift ideas for men that we know your guy will love. That involves taking a peek into your guy’s home workshop. Most guys start out with just the basics like we mentioned in our previous article. Those were kitchen drawer or basic household tools. But if your guy is handy and enjoys doing a lot of DIY projects, then you may want to help him add to the area he considers his home workshop. Our friend and Top Gift’s team member Ray is going to take us on a tour of items that have proved to be helpful to him. We think you may just find some great gift ideas that fit your tool loving guy as well.
Ray loves to work with wood and does many repair projects in his home. He has learned that many tools that are essential to him go beyond the basics. We think that you can pick up some really cool tool gift ideas by following the suggestions that he makes for equipping a home workshop. If your guy is handy with tools or just likes to “piddle” with projects, we bet that any of these items would make an ideal gift for him.
Yes, we can actually hear you thinking, “Aren’t you forgetting something? How about us ladies who also like to work with tools around the house?” Well, you are absolutely right! We apologize and stand corrected! As a matter of fact, all the tools we are featuring in this and our other articles are suitable and can be used by both men and women alike. There are many women who just can’t wait to take a piece of old furniture and turn it into something new. So for both men… and women, whatever your project is we know that some good tools will make it a lot easier and fun to do.
Best Tools For A Home Workshop
Once you have been using basic home tools for a while, you’ll tend to find more and more uses for them. That only means that you are ready for tools that can handle a lot more than just patching holes in the walls, hanging pictures and driving screws. It also means that you are ready for the next step. So, what kind of tools would you be needing next?
We have a very practical list of additional essential tools that are needed for your not-so-basic home projects. Ray says, “These are the exact type of tools that I needed myself and had to add to my basic tools – in my modest workshop in the basement. Because of the rapid advancement in the manufacturing of tools, we now have better and more efficient tools. This has made home projects so much easier and even safer.” Here is a quick list of Ray’s 20 gift picks of essential tools and accessories. These are home workshop essentials that you must have for your home projects.

DEWALT DCK240C2 20v Lithium Drill Driver/Impact Combo Kit
This Dewalt Drill / Impact Driver Combo Kit is a major inclusion of your infant – and yet growing – workshop… You know, the one you are going to have soon. You might ask, ‘Why do I need another drill or even a drill / impact driver?’ Well, the short and simple answer is that different projects require different tools… As the materials you are working with, in your more advanced projects, get more complicated, (such as thicker or denser wood or hard metal objects) your small and handy basic drill / driver or drill is just not going to cut it. In fact, you will probably damage that nice favorite tool of yours real quick!
The drill / driver in this Dewalt Combo Kit has a high-performance motor with 300 unit watts. This compact and lightweight unit, great for tight areas, also has a high-speed transmission with 2 speeds.
If you are not familiar with impact drivers, like the one that comes in this kit, then you are in for a pleasant surprise! I have a little something here to explain and familiarize you with the benefit of owning an impact driver…
“An impact driver usually has 2-3 times more turning force (torque) than the average drill/driver does. This is because it has the normal bit (head) rotation as well as the concussive blows to the bit for more power. This results in the ability to power-drive screws through any kind of thick and dense wood. It also helps to get out those rusty old screws and nuts that may have been exposed to humidity and water… Both inside or outside of the your house.”
One practical feature in the Impact driver in this kit is its one-handed loading capability, which makes it easy while you are working. It has a ¼-inch chuck* that takes 1-inch bit tips. There is a bright 3-LED light ring (with a 20-second delay) on the impact driver. The light will brighten your dark and perhaps cramped project area for better visibility.
*”A chuck is a specialized type of clamp. It is used to hold an object with radial symmetry, especially a cylinder. In drills and mills it holds the rotating tool.” ~Wikipedia
Screw Driver Set
We strongly suggest that you add this Dewalt 35-Piece Screw Driving Set to your purchase of the above Dewalt drill / impact driver kits. It will save you time, money, and a lot of headache later on! It will also minimize dropping, reduce wobbling & breakage because of the magnetic screw lock. There is also a FlexTorq that lets the bits flex up to 15 degrees for those difficult projects.
Impact Grade Socket Adapter / Extension Set
Please make sure that you also get this inexpensive and yet great 3″ Long Impact Grade Socket Adapter / Extension Set. It comes with 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ Drives. This set will make your drill & impact driver work as a versatile high-speed nut driver. By the way, for those hard to get nuts, you can also get this set in 6-inch and 12-inch shafts. I have all the 3-sized shaft sets and using them has made working on my projects so much easier.
& Impact Driver Conversion Chuck
In some of his projects, Ray came across situations where his Dewalt drill (mentioned above) seemed to have a difficult time drilling into a dense or hard wood. So he had to change drills and use a heavy duty one. This took some time away from doing his project and delayed its completion.
Therefore, he decided to buy this DEWALT DW0521 Quick Connect Impact Driver Conversion Chuck. He attached it to his Dewalt impact driver (also mentioned above) and his problem was solved! You see, since the Dewalt impact driver has that intermittent (alternating) knocking impact feature that gives it more turning power. With the attachment of the Dewalt conversion chuck to the impact driver, He had one powerful impact drill. How easy was that?”
The Dewalt impact driver conversion chuck can be used with any 1/4-inch impact driver, just in case you already have an impact driver. The keyless chuck provides for easy locking and unlocking to hold and release your bits. To install chuck, just slide the collar back from the front of the tool, twist to attach to your 1/4-inch impact driver, and release the collar. The chuck is locked in place.
DEWALT 7-1/4-Inch Lightweight Circular Saw with Electric Brake
As your workshop grows, you will need a miter saw or table saw in your workshop. You will, however, always have a use for a 7-1/4-inch circular saw. The versatility of this saw can be increased when you equip it with blades designed for specific projects. For example, a 24-tooth blade for rough carpentry, a 40-tooth blade for finer cuts in hardwoods (with less splintering), and 180-tooth blade for smooth cuts in plywood and MDF (medium density fiberboard).
As you can notice this easy to use 7-¼” Dewalt Circular Saw with Brake is a corded model. You may wonder why we are not suggesting a cordless one. Well, we will tell you exactly why. Ray, our tool authority, started out with a cordless circular saw, but it so happened that there were two problems that he was facing.
First, the battery on his cordless circular saw died down in the middle of some of the projects involving denser woods. Second, there never seemed to be enough power in the cordless saw that came with a good quality, and expensive, combination tool set. As a result, He bought this corded Dewalt circular Saw… to end his problems. He still has and uses his cordless saw, but only for minor jobs involving only soft wood.
Black & Decker Workmate Portable Work Bench
You may have noticed, while doing your own projects, that it is fairly easy to sand something that is flat, like a flat kitchen cabinet door or a table top… You would simply put a piece of plywood (or something else) over your sawhorses and place your door on top of it. This will allow you to use both your hands to operate a power sander or some other tool. However, when it comes to such items as a chair, it is not that simple and you need something different and more versatile than a pair of sawhorses.
That is when you need this Black & Decker Workmate Portable Work Bench. Its jaws resist warping and can be angled to accommodate and hold those uniquely-shaped items. This lightweight (17.8 pounds) portable work bench can hold up to 350 pounds. It can also be folded and stored easily in a corner or against a wall.
If you happen to need a work bench that is bigger and holds more weight you can find 2 larger sizes at the same link.
Makita 4-1/2-Inch Angle Grinder with Aluminum Case
“Another wonderful tool that I cannot do without,” says Ray, “is this Makita 4-½” Angle Grinder. There are other good brands out there, but I definitely prefer this one. I can grind and cut wood, metal, plastic, and even concrete with this grinder. All you need is get the appropriate grinding cup wheel… The grinding cup wheel is the circular piece that attaches to the grinder and comes into contact with whatever object you are working on.
You can use the five 4-½” Grinding wheels cups (also referred to as just “Grinding Wheels”) that come with the grinder for wood, metal, and plastic. For all your masonry and concrete grinding projects, you need to use the 4-½” General Purpose Turbo Rim Diamond Blade that comes with your Makita grinder.
It is imperative that you use the proper protective gear (heavy gloves, eye goggles, thick long-sleeve shirt & pants, head covering, and a breathing mask. This powerful grinder (7.5 AMP motor) causes dust and small particles, from what you are grinding, come loose and fly all over your work area – and that presents a great risk of injury!
It will take a little time, and a few projects, for you to get the hang of this excellent grinding tool. So, don’t let it intimidate you and take charge!”
Stanley Adjustable Sawhorse Twin Pack
After having completed a few of your projects, you’ll soon get tired of working on the ground or on a tipsy table. Why not invest in a simple pair of sawhorses that can provide a steady surface at suitable level? The Stanley – Black & Decker Adjustable Twin Pack Sawhorse is ideal. It holds up to 1000 pounds per pair with height adjustment latches
GRIP MM/SAE Combination 24-Piece Wrench Set
GRIP 89358 MM/SAE Combination Wrench Set, Chrome, 24-Piece
Combination wrench sets are very handy around the house and may be needed in many of your house projects. With a quality set like this 24-Piece GRIP MM/SAE Combination Wrench Set, you won’t be constantly looking for the right size wrench while working.
Combination wrench sets come in two types: SAE (or standard) wrenches are sized in inches (1/4 inch and 1/2 inch, etc.) and metric wrenches sized in millimeters (MM). You should select SAE wrenches if you’ll be working on fasteners around your house. However, when it comes to automotive repairs, you may need a metric set (or both metric & SAE).
In case you are curious, they are called combination wrenches because one end of the wrench is enclosed and studded with “points” that grip the corners of a bolt or nut. The other end of the wrench is open and useful when you are unable to slip the closed end in place while working on your project.
IRWIN QUICK-GRIP 24” Bar Clamp
“You can’t be too rich or have too many clamps,” as woodworkers would say. We suggest that you start your collection of clamps with the ones of suitable sizes for the projects and repairs you’ll do the most. A couple of 24-inch bar clamps that you can easily tighten will handle many of the medium-size projects around your house. Of course, you can always get some smaller ones as well if you find a need for them.
The IRWIN QUICK-GRIP 24” Bar Clamp is an excellent one when it comes to quality and reliable bar clamps.
DEWALT Corded 3 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag
The best option for most projects is a random-orbit sander with a 5-inch pad. A good choice is this DEWALT Corded 3 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Cloth Dust Bag. This 3-amp motor operates at 12,000 OPM, providing ideal sanding speed for a smooth finish.
Mirka Dustless Hook and Loop Sanding Discs
In most of your house projects, you will need sanding pads that range from 80-grit (used for coarse sanding or paint removal) to 220-grit sandpaper (used for fine woodwork). Our suggestion is this compatible Mirka Gold 5-Inch 8-Hole Dustless Hook-and-Loop Sanding Disks (50 per box, 10-pieces each of 80, 100, 120, 150, and 220 grits)
Shop-Vac 5-Gallon 4.5 HP Stainless Steel Wet / Dry Vacuum
As you add to your tool collection, you will notice that there is always more, and more sawdust all over the place. The solution is a quality and practical shop vacuum. One that can be fitted with a collection bag that traps fine dust particles… Such as cleaning up after drywall repair projects.
Ray says, “Speaking from experience, it is also a welcome tool if you were to break some china/glass or have a liquid spill on your kitchen floor… Forget about a broom/brush and dustpan, use your new wet/dry shop vacuum to remove every minute piece of glass and every drop of the liquid. So that if you would not injure your feet if you were to walk barefoot on your kitchen floor… Like I once did!”
We suggest this Shop-Vac 5-Gallon 4.5 Peak HP Stainless Steel Wet / Dry Vacuum to start you off. You may, later on, need a bigger capacity shop vac for your workshop, but that is down the road for now.
Wrecking Bars and Pry Bars
It makes sense that before something new can be installed, something old usually has to go. If that something is a big project, you then must have a 24-inch or larger wrecking bar. A 7-inch bar handles smaller jobs, including removing nails.
We have selected the Stanley 24-inch FatMax Wrecking Bar for lifting and removing the old wood and nails in your large size projects with a good leverage. Ray says, “It is a must to have this tool in your workshop tool arsenal.”
You definitely need the right pry bars for lifting and removing wood and nails in your smaller home projects. This easy to use Dasco 3-Piece Pry Bar Set works like magic. The set includes a 5-½” lil bar, a 7-½” ultra bar, and a 9” trim / pry bar. According to Ray, this is an excellent set to have and a great value for the price… Ray always keeps his set in his tool bag.
Stanley 8” X 12” Steel Carpenter’s Square
“You have to have a dependable tool to measure perpendicular lines extending out from walls and lay out notches for step supports,” says Ray, “You also need to check for square wall corners and wall-to-floor angles. There is nothing worse than completing a home project and then realizing that you have to tear everything down. Not a good feeling! So why not be pro-active and have the right tools before you start your project?”
We suggest that you get the Stanley 8” x 12” Steel Carpenter’s Square to save the day in doing your home projects. Of course, as with any square, check it for accuracy before leaving the store.
IRWIN VISE-GRIP Multi-Tool Wire Stripper / Crimper / Cutter
It is common to see that many types of pliers have a wire cutter built in. However, they’re rarely as handy and practical to use or long-lasting as a set of dedicated wire cutters. You need a good quality wire cutter that will handle all your important electrical home projects (wire stripping, cutting, and crimping) properly and safely. Therefore, the IRWIN VISE-GRIP Multi-Tool Wire Stripper / Crimper / Cutter is such a tool. We suggest that you get this inexpensive tool rather than relying on your general cutting pliers.
Zircon Electronic Stud Finder with AC Wire Warning
Hopefully, we all learn from our experiences in life. The same lesson is true when it comes to do-it-yourself (DIY) home projects. Have you ever hung a heavy picture frame or a heavy mirror from fasteners into just a plain drywall? If so, you have probably had to replace that beautiful picture frame or that expensive mirror! Well, because that plain and thin drywall did not support the weight of your treasured items.
Why not instead, use an electronic multi-function stud finder to make your project easier. The Zircon Electronic Stud Finder with AC Wire Warning can easily locate a solid wood or metal stud, as well as hidden electrical wires for you… So you can put your hanger hardware on the wall in a safe and solid spot. What would we ever do without such electronic gadgets?
Stack-On See-Through Drawer Storage Cabinet
Do you ever wonder why your home gets so cluttered with the old and the new ‘stuff’ you have bought? If you have, then you would appreciate the art of organization for placing all your ‘stuff’ where they belong and can be easily found… when you need them.
The same thing is true when it comes to miscellaneous items that have to do with our home repair and new projects. For example, assorted nails, screws, washers, nuts & bolts, tapes, very small tools, and so many other small items. It is very frustrating to find yourself in need of something for your home project, that you know you have, and cannot find it.
Consider the problem solved with this Stack-On See-Through 27-Drawers Storage Cabinet. You can efficiently store and organize all your crafts, fasteners, home and office small supplies and tools. The 27-multi-drawer bin contains 23 medium drawers and 4 large drawers. We highly suggest that you get this versatile multi-drawer cabinet. It is also available in 12, 18, and 22 drawers as well. Ray says, “I have 8 of these cabinets in different sizes and still have more small stuff laying around my workshop! Guess I should get some more!”
